Description

The gardens at HCC are home to many traditional herbal and medicinal plants, whose care/uses were unfamiliar to most Hastings community members. These plants had become unruly and overrun, acting as a deterrent rather than a welcome.
The Hastings Community Association (HCA) recognized that it is was in need of revitalization, and re-introduced the community to the joy of planning, planting, growing, and harvesting food.
The garden revitalization began with a structural overhaul. The HCA received professional consultation from a garden design company, and partnered with them to install a design that ensured a welcoming and accessible space that is able to produce plentiful fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are enjoyed within programs at HCC. These programs target seniors, parents/tots, out-of-school care children, and youth.
