Description
Artist Sharon Kallis led workshops to create woven sculptures for the marsh pond and trees in CRAB Park with the intention that these forms would serve as perches, protection and nesting locations for park birds, while also providing an opportunity for community members to learn about the plants and wildlife of the area. Using local materials (invasive and garden maintenance clippings), forms were woven for the park as well as a protective boundary for the women's memorial. Local park visitors and women at the Downtown Easide Women's Centre, Enterprising Women Making Art and the Friday afternoon Oppenheimer Park Ladies Tea Group participated in workshops located at those sites. A connection was also forged with the Downtown Eastside Centre for the Arts due to the collaboration on getting community involved with the weaving of the boundary for the women's memorial fence.
