EartHand Gleaners’ team members have collaborated on numerous projects.
The “Buzzscaping Trillium Park” project worked with school children and multiple
other community stakeholders and volunteers to create a pollinator house. The house is still actively maintained by artists in the park and school children still release bees each spring.
Other projects by EartHand Gleaners include the Soil to Sky project, bringing community
members together to make kites from natural materials gathered and grown in the
neighbourhood; and the Land & Sea project, exploring connections between
cultures through common materials, including nets from nettle and linen, and leather
made from fish skins. Both these projects are excellent examples of how they manage
projects built on community engagement with multiple stakeholders, often including
vulnerable populations.
EartHand Gleaners is approaching its 5th anniversary; they’ve established a reputation as
a world leader in eco-art programs and projects, and a core following of skilled and
committed community members.
They have two young and relatively new team members, Jaymie Johnson and Nicola
Hodges. Jaymie has been interning with Sharon since 2016 on Pollinator Pasture
projects with the City of Richmond and City of Kelowna; she has a BFA from Emily Carr,
and permaculture certificate. Nicola Hodges, a young textile skill holder, was the leader
of Trillium open studio sessions summer 2017 and represented EartHand teaching skills
from the Weaving Wagon at the Vancouver Civic Theatre Plaza 150 celebrations.
