Description
The DTES Seed Library is a place where community members can share and access local seeds to grow food, flowers and traditional medicinal plants. A 'seed library' is different from a 'seed bank' in that the seeds are meant to be distributed and shared - not stored. Hives for humanity provide year-round access to easy to grow, hardy, pollinator friendly, traditional, medicinal, vegetable, flower and herb varieties. Their goal is to empower people with the skills to successfully start seeds; grow them into plants; enjoy their edible, medicinal or ecosystem benefits; then complete the cycle through seed saving - rather than simply provide them with seeds. Starting seeds can be the most challenging part of seed saving, and we want to improve the chance of success for participants and engage people who may not feel confident growing plants on their own, or even being in a garden/farm environment. In order to accomplish this goal, they've add resources for DTES Seed Library users in the form of a "zine" style hand out, made by DTES residents, with tips on seed starting, and plant uses, based on the experience they've had growing gardens in the DTES. .
