This project engaged the community in the planning and design of a unique, welcoming patio and the creation of handmade tile mosaics stepping stones each expressive and reflective of the community creator. The patio is under cover and an outdoor extension of the lobby & craft room areas. This project created a "Lobby Live 'In" where musical performers, free art and cultural events and luncheons take place. The completion of the stepping stone project has been integral to the launch of this new community space. The colorful glass tiles for the project were donated from previous neighbourhood & citywide projects and were stored at the Sunset Nursery. Workshops take place in the lobby & outdoors promoting intergenerational & intercultural connections.A patio-design session was held at Sunset Community Centre, inviting community to design the placement of the stepping stones. Stepping stone sessions will be held for all ages including preschool, youth, seniors and groups such as: the South Asian women's & men's groups. A high profile workshop with the broader community is to take place at Sunset Community's Canada Day festivities which attract up to 2000 community members. Community members will participate at any or all steps of this project from planning, design and creation to site installation of approximately 100 unique pavers. The outcome is a functional welcoming space built by community for community to gather.
