Braemar ParkDescription
The Braemar Park Community Accessible Garden has invigorated an existing social node while providing a valued community service. The project included both fully accessible garden plots for neighbours with mobility and physical issues and ground level areas for others and smaller children. Some of the park's most active users are long-term patients at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre. The park is also adjacent to St. Jude's Anglican Home - a complex care facility for the elderly. To enable the full participation of these users with mobility aids and who use wheelchairs, the project also included accessible services (pursuant to guidelines developed by CoV Persons with Disability Advisory Committee) for ease of travel and seating for relaxation and rest. The garden features a mix of communal and individual garden plots, 20% of which are accessible to persons who use a wheelchair. Some plots are allocated to nearby schools. This Community Garden adds new interest into a relatively underutilized park space at the north west corner of Braemar Park, and adds to the South Cambie neighbourhood by providing a new area for social networking, education and interaction with all generations and abilities.
