Description

"Ray-Cam is not just a community centre, it is the centre of a community.” This statement by a long-standing community partner captures the spirit of our centre which has been the informal living room of the nearby housing project for 40 years.

This project engages neighbourhood residents young and old in creating beauty and pride in their centre and hands-on learning through replanting our front garden area and creating a community art statement. Replanting our front garden area. Sessions with youth and seniors to determine what to plant. Participants will evaluate based on growing conditions, garden maintenance, visual appeal and taste (for edible plants) ( 2 sessions)Workshops with Girlzgroup, Afterschool Program, Families and Seniors to plant and maintain the selected plants in the space. (3 sessions)Maintenance of the space through the above programs and the Youth Incentive work experience program. (Ongoing) Community art statement Large pre-cut wooden letters spelling out #CENTREOFACOMMUNITY will be painted by participants in the family program and youth in the afterschool program and mounted on the fences facing Hastings Street and Campbell Street. A total of 38 letters will be painted so each individual or family would paint their own letter.
